Vajdahunyad Castle
The Vajdahunyad Castle was built in 1908 in the City Park as a replica of a Gothic castle in Transylvania. It was built for the millennium celebrations of 1896 according to the plans of Ignác Alpár with the aim of displaying the thousand-year-old Hungarian architecture in a single building. Vajdahunyad Castle present this mix of styles from Romanesque and Gothic to Renaissance to Baroque. Originally, it was made of wood on a temporary basis for the millennium, but it became so popular that by 1908 it was rebuilt of stone and brick. Today the castle gives home to the Agricultural Museum. One of the most beautiful works of Romantic historicism in Hungary was declared a monument in 1991. The building is located on an artificial island surrounded by The City Park Lake and can be reached by four bridges. In the inner courtyard you can find the statue of Anonymous.
The Castle is 2.9 km from our hostel on foot and 3.3 km by car. It can be reached by public transport in 24 minutes by trolley-bus number 74 (to Közlekedési Múzeum stop).
